ROYAL VISITS • Queen Elizabeth II, who died on 8 September at the age of 96, was the first reigning monarch to set foot in New Zealand — visits planned for her father, King George VI, having been prevented by war and illness. Elizabeth visited Aotearoa 10 times during her reign, the first time in 1953, just months after her coronation. Looked at in retrospect, these trips mark shifts in our own national story: from extraordinary performances of devotion, to Waitangi commemorations, an egging, and treaty apologies and settlements.

UNDERWATER WORLD

SAVE THE DATE

FROM KIWIANA TO CLIMATE CHANGE • Richard Wolfe is an artist, curator and author best known for his works on Kiwiana. His 40th book, Footprints on the Land, is about how humans have changed New Zealand.

Breakfast: Our Most Diplomatic Meal

ONCE WERE MATES • We’ve stood together in wartime, been long-time friendly neighbours and enjoyed our sporting rivalries. Many families span both sides of the Tasman Sea. So why did Australia turn sour on New Zealanders? And is there a way back to mateship?

BEST OF FRENEMIES • A timeline of Australian—New Zealand relations.

Home Fires Burning • Auckland academic Michael Neill moved to New Zealand from Northern Ireland as a child, leaving that society’s bitter divisions behind. In this personal essay he recalls how, decades later, he still believes his family was the likely accidental target of a firebombing that could have killed his infant son. Nearly 40 years on, he contemplates a time when tensions in this country fed angry rhetoric — and action.

BLUE SMOKE: THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE OF OUR CARS • New Zealand has one of the oldest, least efficient and largest vehicle fleets per capita in the developed world. How did we get here and where are we going?

WISH YOU WERE HERE? SUBSCRIBE TO NORTH & SOUTH and go into the draw to WIN this incredible experience HERE

Island Life • Over 35 years, a barren former sheep farm overrun with rodents has been turned into a lush landscape alive with native wildlife.

Following The Threads • The loss of a collaboration between artist Colin McCahon and weaver Ilse von Randow has sparked both a deep search and a conversation about how we value art.

ALL OVER THE SHOW • Simon Phillips and Carolyn Burns are the Melbourne-based, Aotearoaraised husband-and-wife team who have been creating, performing and directing theatre for decades.

BOLD & BEAUTIFUL BEERS

A FOREIGN FLOCK • How did a small spa town in Austria end up with the largest collection of kea in captivity — and what is it doing with them?

Building Bridges • The last two years have marked big changes in writer Pip Hall’s life, including the end of her 19-year marriage, a move south to her childhood town, and writing the third season of the crime drama, One Lane Bridge. Hall, a ball of mischievous energy, is ready to face all of it head on.

BEYOND STEAMPUNK • In Aotearoa’s steampunk capital, a self-professed history geek appreciates a much more obscure connection.

When Wine’s Not Enough • The brains behind Greystone winery in North Canterbury is passionate about permaculture.

The Living Museum • A prized exhibit at a much-loved small-town museum receives a makeover from volunteers keen to keep the Waikato’s history...
