Late Afternoon

Four corners • Behind bars

The sad story of DEPRESSION • Since the 1980s, depression has become an increasingly widely diagnosed disorder. It is now one of the leading forms of disability worldwide. MIND shift • Ketamine is changing the lives of depression sufferers for whom nothing else has worked, but it is only getting to a fraction of those it could help. New Zealand researchers are at the forefront of a push to make it more available.

Suits • A bipolar father’s ill-conceived enthusiasms and the lows that rapidly followed them provided an unacknowledged backdrop to family life. But how do we untangle where personality ends and mental illness begins?

FAKE friends • Bots designed to become treasured companions can’t really wish us well. They can’t wish us anything.

Counting change • Liv Lewis-Long from Simplicity looks at how KiwiSaver policy changes past, present, and future have (and might) impact our collective future wealth.

A flirtation in punctuation • Just because our texts sound like two insufferable people sparring in an English tutorial doesn’t mean they’re not fun.

State of The National • The National have returned after the pandemic and personal struggles with two new albums in 2023, as well a renewed engagement with their backlist. Ahead of their New Zealand tour, Emily Perkins talks to bass player Scott Devendorf.

My first ever…CONCERT • For a 13-year-old, the roar of the crowd for a yellow-haired David Bowie at Western Springs 40 years ago was a first taste of something special.

SAVE THE DATE

Frozen storms • Painter Georgie Hill conjures up real and imagined visions of cosmic meteorology, her distinctive technique creating patterns of movement and rhythm, tension and release.

Exhibitionism • So many artists racking up massive student debt, but where can you go to see what they’ve made of it? Here are the best galleries to cool down in over the dog days of summer.

DARE TO HOPE • This Black Caps team have racked up achievements earlier generations could only dream of, but have yet to deliver the test-cricket result their fans crave most. Time to...
