North & South

A CAPITAL TIME • A famously walkable city (well, as long as you avoid the hills), Wellington’s city centre is chock full of architecturally important buildings. In his latest book, Wellington Architecture: A Walking Guide, architecture writer John Walsh gives the history behind 120 of Wellington’s most iconic and interesting buildings, all of which can be visited on foot. The Wellington guide is Walsh’s third, following editions on Auckland and Christchurch. Here he describes the making of the pocket-sized book, and how much history you can find hidden within a city.

A Prescient View • Foreign Correspondence is a new regular column by Peter Bale, considering world events from a New Zealand perspective.

No-Go-Zone • Rāhui is an ancient form of tapu/practice put in place by local iwi to protect through prohibition. While the use of rāhui has developed over time, they can be imposed following the loss of life, to replenish resources and for spiritual purposes. Here are a few recent examples from around Aotearoa.

The Shocking State of Dental Care • It’s the gaping abyss in our health system. Why can’t we fix it?

Love Your Gums • Dental issues aren’t just toothaches. They can lead to chronic pain, malnutrition and infections. Oral health problems predispose people to a range of chronic conditions, from cardiovascular disease to pancreatic and oral cancers.

A QUIET PLACE • In our bustling day-to-day lives, it can sometimes feel impossible to snatch a few quiet moments to yourself. As human-made noise colonises more and more of the planet, a small group of volunteers is starting to fight back.

THE UNHAPPY VALLEY • It’s bloody paradise, it’s a nightmare, it’s a bargain — the residents don’t agree on much, except that Waipori Falls is unlike anywhere else in New Zealand.

THE UNREST • What started as a peaceful protest at parliament escalated over 23 days into fiery clashes between protesters and police. Documentary photographer Cameron James McLaren took his camera to Wellington in the early days, and was there again at the bitter end.

Home Truths • Beautiful symbols of faded colonial grandeur, our historic homesteads leave a complicated legacy.

AKAROA • One of the only places in the country with an overtly French influence, this harbour town is alive with memories of love and romance.

ON THE GRAVY TRAIN • Sick of being unable to find a decent pie anywhere in Europe, these Kiwi expats decided to start baking their own.

People. Land. Wine. • At one of the country’s few Māori-owned wineries, Tiki’s values of kaitiakitanga, whanaungatanga, and manaakitanga are offering a new way forward in the wine industry.

ECHOES OF HISTORY • Most New Zealanders remain unaware of the Surafend massacre by Anzac soldiers in 1918. But members of the far right know it well — as an inspiration, not a source of shame.
